Murren is an eyrie of a village set on an elevated shelf of pasture in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland.
It is a car-free village and has managed to retain its endearing desert-island atmosphere.
Perched on a high, sunny terrace at the foot of the Schilthorn facing the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, Murren is the highest altitude ski resort in the Bernese Oberland.
The famous “Inferno” amateur downhill race from the Schilthorn peak to Mürren is an annual event held every February.
Mürren itself was “discovered” by the British in the 1840s, and has a long tradition both of winter sports and of hospitable gentility.
It is worth the journey to Murren for the views alone.
From Mürren, the valley floor is 800m straight down, and the panorama of snowy peaks filling the sky is dazzling. There is a breathtaking journey by cable-car up to Birg and on to the Schilthorn summit where you can enjoy exceptional panoramic views.
